ENMA 6010:  System Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis

Current Semester Projects – Spring 2011

For the Spring 2011 offering of ENMA 6010, the primary project sponsor is the Marquette University College of Nursing.  Under the guidance of this sponsor, teams will be conducting system modeling, simulation, and analysis of patient discharge processes at different units in Aurora Sinai Medical Center and Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center.  These projects will be integrated with sponsor efforts to improve three aspects of the patient discharge system:

The intent of this work is to describe the process that occurs on the day of hospital discharge from the time a registered nurse (RN) learns that a patient will be discharged to the time of patient discharge from the hospital to their home, a skilled nursing facility, a long term care facility, or a hospice facility.  There are a number of steps that may vary from patient to patient before a patient is discharged.  The goal is to create a system model of patient discharge on the day of discharge taking into consideration: (1) preceding processes, (2) variations in the process, (3) barriers, (4) interruptions, (5) time, and (6) differences by discharge destination.  The knowledge gained from system modeling on multiple units will be used to uncover commonalities and uniquenesses in processes and process disruptions within and across units that inform the development of effective and efficient discharge process.

The students will spend time with RNs who will be discharging patients to understand the process and the decisions that RNs must make.  A focus group will be conducted at the end of the mapping process to validate the process with the nurses who participated.  Other stakeholders in the process are case managers, social workers, and pharmacists.

Project teams for this semester’s projects are:

·         Team 1:  St. Lukes 10T – Alfaro, Ortega, Pogacar

·         Team 2:  St. Lukes 3EF – Germana, Mueller, Williams

·         Team 3:  Sinai 4C – Clavier, Lentsh, Sinnarkar

·         Team 4:  Sinai 4S – Jacobs, Nunez, Schuller-Rach, Zagnoon

Primary sponsor contacts at the College of Nursing are:

·         Kathy Bobay:  kathleen.bobay@marquette.edu

·         Marianne Weiss:  Marianne.weiss@marquette.edu

In order to assist teams in preparing deliverables for their projects, two case studies are provided below.  Note that time and resource limitations may cause student deliverables to provide somewhat less detail than what is provided in the case studies.  Nevertheless, the case studies should provide teams with an idea of what their deliverables should look like.
