ENMA 6040: Lean
Systems
Course Description
Originally developed by
Toyota as the Toyota Production System, lean and associated six-sigma
approaches to manufacturing have spread to processes in business, healthcare,
and education. In this course, students
are provided with a toolbox of commonly applied lean tools, including:
-
Process flow diagrams - Waste
identification
-
Value stream mapping
- 5-S
-
Process simulation
- Visual
controls
Industry/business-sponsored
student team projects provide the mechanism for students to apply these tools
to real-world problems. This course
includes a set of tutorials on using the free student version of the Arena
simulation software, and students will build simulation models for their team
project using Arena.
Application of lean tools in
the absence of a “lean paradigm” produces marginal results. Assigned readings in this course are targeted
at providing students with a “lean thinking” perspective on the world.
This course is designed to
prepare students for SME/ASM
lean certification.
