Objectives
The
educational objectives for this course are in accordance with the CRISP-DM
cross-industry standard for data mining ( www.crisp-dm.org ). Students will be capable of:
1. Establishing business-related
objectives and requirements for a data mining project,
2. Converting this business knowledge
into a data mining problem definition,
3. Collecting data essential to
solving the data mining problem,
4. Preparing the dataset for
analysis,
5. Applying appropriate data mining
tools and techniques to the dataset,
6. Evaluating the results of the data
mining analysis,
7. Presenting results and
formulating recommendations for next actions.
Through achievement
of these objectives, students will be able to:
It is not the objective of this class to
prepare experienced practitioners capable of applying the technologies covered
to complex problems and processes.
Rather, the class is structured to allow students to assess the
potential of each technology studied for impacting specific and general
decision making processes. The course is
highly project-oriented, so that students will have first-hand experience in
the pros, cons, and side-effects of using these technologies.
